Cecropia by Christian Schoeler Maldonado
About the project:
“Unless you clearly see that ugliness Which makes me beatiful, You cannot know that there is a certain Ugliness more beautiful than any beauty. - Il Vertunno dell’ Arcimboldo Don Gregorio Camanini Milano, 1591.”
Inspired by the work of Arcimboldo in the 16th century, this project became an investigation on the relativeness of the beauty. Each photograph shows one individual leaf from the Cecropia tree after one month of it’s fall. They are naturally transformed into organic shapes and sometimes into weird faces and masks or even human figures. Captured in the way they were at the moment, but carefully positioned and lightened to better show it’s individual character.

Jim Denevan makes enormous temporary drawings on sand, earth and ice that are eventually erased by waves and weather. Thank goodness we can still see his work in beautiful photos like these and soon a documentary film directed by Meredith Danluck.
I’ve posted about >Jim Denevan before…

Robert Hodgin - Turbulence
This spectacular high-speed video shows a dove in flight. Note how its wings flex through its stroke and the way the wings rotate over the course of the downstroke and reversal. There is incredible beauty and complexity in this motion. The change in wing shape and angle of attack is what allows the bird to maximize the lift it generates. Note also how the outer feathers flare during the downstroke. This promotes turbulence in the air moving near the wing, which prevents separated flow that would cause the dove to stall.
