“This was shot just after a sunset on the roof of a palace at Shugruf village in the Haraz Mountains of Yemen. No extra lighting was used. The sun has just set (see the top right corner of the image) and mist has started to rise from the valley below.” Photograph by Matjaz Krivic, Slovenia, winner of Best Single Image in a Portfolio - Amazing Places category.

Scientist Trap Antimatter for a Record Breaking 16 Minutes!!
(gizmodo) - Scientists working on the Antihydrogen Laser Physics Apparatus (ALPHA) near Geneva, Switzerland did something no other scientists have done. They stored atoms of antihydrogen for 1000 seconds (~16 minutes) which is 10,000 times longer than they’ve ever done before. By trapping and observing antimatter for that long, scientists can better understand the properties of it.

“The Hyper Molecular Modeling System is a novel multimodal molecular modeling kit that creates a seamless interface between a hand held physical ball-and-stick molecular model and a computer generated virtual molecular model. Hyper Molecular Models or “hypermodels” blend multiple modalities (tactile, force, audio, and visual), thereby improving a student’s understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological changes that occur on the molecular level.”

Möbius Transformations Revealed is a short video by Douglas Arnold and Jonathan Rogness which depicts the beauty of Möbius transformations and shows how moving to a higher dimension reveals their essential unity. It was one of the winners in the 2007 Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge and was featured along with the other winning entries in the September 28, 2007 issue of journal Science. The video, which was first released on YouTube in June 2007, has been watched there by more than a million and a half viewers and classified as a “Top Favorite of All Time“ first in the Film & Animation category and later in the Education category. It was selected for inclusion in the MathFilm 2008 DVD, published by Springer.
