8bitfuture:

Newly discovered drug makes old memories come back.

An enzyme in the brain called PKMzeta helps maintain long term storage of memories in the brain. During testing, a group of neuroscientists found that boosting levels of the enzyme helped rats recall, in great detail, events they’d experienced many days beforehand. Lowering levels of the enzyme caused the rats to forget old memories more quickly. What’s remarkable about this discovery is that the enzyme can help the animals recall these old memories even if they weren’t boosting their levels of PKMzeta at the time the memories were formed.

If the same technique worked in humans, it could be a way to treat memory loss, particularly that caused by old age or disease.

Why don’t we ever see things like this on the news?!

metaconscious:

Monster Prominence Erupts from the Sun

When a rather large M 3.6 class flare occurred near the edge of the Sun on Feb. 24, 2011, it blew out a gorgeous, waving mass of erupting plasma that swirled and twisted for 90 minutes. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the event in extreme ultraviolet light. Because SDO images are high definition, the team was able to zoom in on the flare and still see exquisite details. And using a cadence of a frame taken every 24 seconds, the sense of motion is, by all appearances, seamless.

Excellent high-speed video of liquids and other things falling. What makes this stand out from other high-speed video I’ve seen is the way they play with changing up the speed. It feels a bit like bullet time. A couple times I wondered if I was looking at CG, but of course it isn’t.
