The dry lake beds of Death Valley National Park in California are home to a perplexing phenomenon: roaming rocks. These rocks, some of which weigh hundreds of pounds, leave long furrows in the dirt but have no obvious means of propulsion. One theory posits that the rocks glide on collars of ice around their base. The ice acts like a flotation device when rain wets the valley and then the rocks slide so easily that high winds can move them across the surface. #
“Artist Anne Brodie took one of the lumps of ice that she had brought back from Antarctica out of its lodgings inside the British Antarctic Surveys freezer in Cambridge and let it not so gently melt over the course of the evening. It was acoustically wired up by sound engineers Lee Patterson and Mark Hornsby, and produced uncomfortably loud interruptions as the ancient air kept locked under pressure by the ice belched into the London air. The cabinet was recycled from an exhibition held in the British museum.”

This, on my leg, is the incompressible form of the conservation of mass equation in a fluid, also known as the continuity equation. When people ask what it means, I say it defines flow. Sometimes I say it means you should have studied more physics, but that is only when I am feeling like being funny. What it means in more detail is that, for an incompressible fluid, the partial derivative of the velocity of the fluid in the three spatial dimensions must sum to zero.
