This project is a collaboration with musician Gwyneth Herbert in which music, art and science come together. In direct response to Gwyneth’s album, developed during an artist residency for Aldeburgh Music, I explored the science of cymatics as a live, interactive performance. The project was a symbiotic blend of time lapse photography, video and sound responsive kinetic works. The core of the visuals were created by using the live double bass feed to vibrate liquids, powders and a combination of materials.

Library of water from Alexandra Carr Sculpture on Vimeo.
Shot while on a year long artist’s residency in Seyðisfjörður, Iceland.
During my residency I am exploring notions of our perception of reality, the nature of light, changing states of matter, the underlying structure of the landscape and our connection to the cosmos. I have been exploring optics and the distortion of our percieved environment.
This video was filmed at the Library of Water in West Iceland. The space contains columns of glacial water collected from glaciers around iceland. The room is hosts to a spectacular array of refractions and reflections which constantly warp as you move.
